My May New FO

Finally got a couple of new starts for ME!  The past couple of weeks I've really been keeping Bernie busy, and I've wanted to finish off some scraps into blocks and then into quilts, but the really fun thing for me is that I have started something for ME!  I've needed some table runners and place mats that don't show the black from the newsprint as much as the white ones that I presently have.  (DH can't start a morning without the paper!)

I purchased a few packs of some nickels and decided on an easy pattern that would work up easily.  I was able to even get more of the coordinating fabric for fill in so I still have two packs left!

Yesterday I got them sandwiched for quilting and soon they will be completed!  Three place mats is perfect.  We usually just have one other person over, and if we have more, I use a table cloth.  Can't wait to get these finished.

The other day I saw a cute table runner in a magazine and got an idea.  Over a year ago I finished up this cute thing

and for all that time, I've had a cookie sheet of 1.5 inch squares sitting on the floor awaiting something.  I was just too lazy to sort them or do anything with them, so they just stayed on that cookie sheet under a table in my sewing room.  TaDa  then the picture in the magazine led me to finish this top and yesterday I even got it sandwiched and now the cookie sheet is gone and I have a new project from sort of old pieces!  Bonanza!
This month I also made some fun little mats for the girls that I went with to California in April.  One of the gals had collected shells and made a cute candle holder for them.
The candle holder made us all laugh because the cute condo we stayed in had one like it with a little note that the candle could be taken outside if we wanted.  The owner had the cutest notes all over in the condo and a huge 3 ring binder of things to do in Newport Beach.  It was such a fun place to stay and now we all have a vacation memo!  ...girls will be girls!

So now that the month is nearing its close, I feel like I've accomplished a lot.  My new projects for self are going to someone who will appreciate them!!!

Have a great day everyone!

Strings and Crumbs

If you've read my blog more than once you know how much I love strings!  I make many quilts using strings--mostly scrappy fabric about 2-2.5 inches wide and sometimes I use even a string as little as 1.25 inches.  I know crazy, but they look great.

I've finished a few quilt tops this week using up some of the smaller pieces of my strings and then combining them onto a longer strip (string) making what many call crumb quilts.

On a yahoo group there was a call out for some quilts ready to be sent to Russia by July 4 of this year.  I had some crumbs lying around and some that needed finishing.

Here are a couple that I've cut the backing to match.

Because of my trying to meet a deadline, these quilts use big pieces of fabric and just a couple of rows of strings.  They'll be quilted quite closely and I'll be able to add to the list of donated quilts for Quilts Beyond Borders.

Another quilt top I finished came from an idea from that Sunshine Yahoo Group.  One of the main contributors Carol E. (blog found  HERE )posted a picture of a string quilt going vertically.  I thought about the black strips I had purchased in a large bag of strings.  I used the strings, then I made some stars from the box of cuttings from my bindings.  I also had a strip of strings already sewn together and I added a few more crumb blocks and another star and then ended with a couple of 3.5 inch strings.

I'm not sure I can part with this one.  I love the black and the warm tones with it.  But, it has some "boy" stuff in there and it will probably find its way to Project Linus.  I just need to find the right backing!

Here are some other quilt tops I put together the first part of this week.
These will be sandwiched when I can find a suitable backing. I surely do hope that I can finish these and add to the quilts for Russia.  If not since the one quilt is from Sunshine Lotto, I will donate to either Wrap a Smile or Quilts Beyond Borders.

Over at Festival of Strings  are some great string quilt ideas.

May "me" Week

This week I've been sewing my heart out!

Finished this quilt for Project Linus:

Yesterday I made this top and didn't even dent my "strings" drawer.
Monday I finished these tops:

Yes, some were almost finished and just needed borders, but some were from the start.  The tops will be added to my Project Linus bag and I'll let someone else finish them.  I've just got to clear things out so that I can work on my Commissioned Quilt.  The fabrics for that should be here next week!  I'm so excited.  Hopefully today I can play with the block a bit.

After reading the Sunshine Quilters Yahoo Group last night, I cut some green 3.5 inch squares and added them to some blocks that I had won in a lotto recently.
...and I nearly forgot this little quilt that went into the mail yesterday for my swap partner for May.

I also ordered more labels:

And now for some May beauty from our yard.

That was a fun little break and now back to some sewing.  If I haven't visited your blog, it's cause I'm so busy sewing!!!!  Visiting blogs...maybe Sunday!

A Few Distractions of Late!

Now that three quilts are done and mailed off, I have more to finish and it seems that I have had endless distractions that have taken me away from quilting.

I did have lunch with the gals I went to California recently and one of the gals had taken the sea shells and made a cute little centerpiece and then I made a mat for them to sit on.  I added to that some of the things my oldest son sent me from Hawaii while he lived there and then I still had some shells from my sis when she lived in Virginia Beach.

Some photos from Newport Beach:

It was such a fun trip!

Now that I'm home, I still have a new iphone that I have totally figured out and the earphones don't seem to work for me so I need to go back to the store and then I need to head the other way--to Bountiful and take my computer in.  It's giving me some problems even after it was serviced while I was away!  Seems like all I've been doing is running around!

One Sunshine quilt on the machine that I didn't get finished yesterday and two on the spare bed that need binding!  ...maybe today...but then I've been saying that for two weeks now...can't believe I've been home for two weeks and don't have any more to show for my time here!

We did take some time yesterday to see Mud the movie with Michael McConaughey.  That was a nail biter!  Great movie!!!

Finished Feels Great!

I've been to California and back and now finally catching up!  I finished the quilt that I've shown before.
I love the lime green binding on this one.  The quilting turned out even better than I could have imagined.

Then this one:

What a day I had yesterday.  I went to get some bloodwork done and couldn't find Labworks in Ogden.  I asked someone, and still couldn't find it.  I thought I had Google map and it was Yahoo and giving me incomplete information.  So after about 1 1/2 hours trying to find the place on a fasting mindset, I headed to Bountiful which is about 30 minutes away to try their lab.  So at 10:30 rather than the 8:00 a.m. I'd hoped for, I found I was too dehydrated to give blood.  It just wouldn't go up the needle.  Bummer!  With a severe headache I stopped for some breakfast only to find it was lunchtime!  ...and that was just the beginning.  But last night during NCIS I finished the handwork on the above quilts and felt a little less disoriented.  It took a whole day for my nerves to unravel and the water to get through my system again.  Today, I'm still trying to rehydrate and then I'll try again tomorrow, drinking water in the a.m.  Wish someone would have told me sooner that I could fast and drink water.  Oh well.  Another experience in life!!

It was also my MIL's birthday, yesterday.
